Wedding Planning as a Career: What You Should Know Before Deciding You may consider yourself a party planner extraordinaire, creating lavish celebrations on shoestring budgets. As a result, you might be wondering whether a career in wedding planning is right for you. There are certain fundamental things you should consider before branching out into this particular business. If you do a little research and planning ahead of time, you can avoid costly mistakes later on. The Role of a Wedding Planner To begin with, it is highly important that you understand the true role of a wedding planner. According to the African Wedding Guide, the role of a wedding consultant is multi-faceted. It involves serving as a facilitator, mediator, money manager, and a dream maker. At times, you might even have to act as a quasi-therapist for your nervous clients. Skills Required There are certain skills that are essential to the job of a wedding planner. For instance, he or she must be able to present a calm demeanor at ALL times (even when the minister is an hour late!) As a wedding planner, you’ll be faced with your share of challenges, and it is important that you maintain cool composure under fire. It is also important that you enjoy working with people, because that will be your ultimate responsibility. In addition, you must be able to serve as a good spokesperson. In essence, you will represent the interests of the bride and the groom. It also helps to be an effective negotiator, so that you can get the best possible product at the lowest possible price. You should be skillful at organization. You’ll have to handle a number of details, from the arrangement of flowers to paying the wedding band. Therefore, you must be able to effectively multi-task. Moreover, you’ll be operating your own business, so you need to have some understanding of the laws which govern your enterprise. It also helps to have superb decorating skills, since you may be decorating both the church or other wedding venue and the reception hall. A general knowledge of wedding reception etiquette may also come in handy, as you are the one the couple will come to with questions. Still, recognize the fact that, even if your skills are not up to par now, they can be improved over time. There are steps you can take to speed up your learning process. First, there are companies that offer certification for wedding planners and consultants. These certification courses typically include course materials, tests and quizzes, and regular checking in with the main office. Second, you can approach wedding planners and wedding package companies for volunteer or apprenticeship opportunities. When doing this, keep in mind, these individuals are in business to provide a great service and to make money. If they sense that you only want to work with them to learn how they do what they do, and then leave, it is unlikely that they will be interested in working with you. Most business owners will want to train and invest time in someone who will be around for some time to help them grow their company. Whether you decide to teach yourself, or, participate in a wedding planner course, know that there is training involved, and, once you have educated yourself, you have a wonderful and rewarding career ahead of you. How to Select the Right Photographer for Your Wedding Style and Budget

How to Select the Right Photographer for Your Wedding Style and Budget A wedding photographer is ultimately the keeper of your most cherished memories. He or she will provide the photographic evidence of the day you made your marriage vows. Therefore, it’s important that you find someone who is reputable, someone who will capture your day with grace and style. Choosing the wrong photographer could be disastrous, but how do you go about choosing the right one? Obtain Referrals Perhaps the best way to find a good wedding photographer is through word-of-mouth. You’ll want to consult relatives and friends who have recently married and find out who they used. Make sure, though, you find out whether your family and friends were sufficiently satisfied with the final product. Be sure to view their photos if possible, do you like the photographer’s style? Also, if possible, hire a professional rather than try to rely on a volunteer. While amateur photographers mean well, they cannot duplicate the lovely results of the professional. Arrange a Meeting Once you have found some prospects, be sure to arrange face-to-face meetings. In fact, you should schedule meetings with at least three photographers so that you can have a basis for comparison. It is important to see examples of the photographer’s work, so you get a feel for his or her individual style. Some photographers prefer to do formal portrait work, while others specialize in candid or “photojournalistic” poses. In other words, if you’re looking for traditional photos, don’t hire a trendy photographer to do the work. All Inclusive Weddings - Photographer Included? A newer option on the market today is the all inclusive wedding package. If you are purchasing an inclusive package, more often than not, your photographer will be included in the package price. If this is the case for you, be sure you follow all the steps mentioned here, and, find out ahead of time if you get to choose from several photographers….or if they select one for you. Find Out What is Included…Any “Hidden” Costs? During your meeting, ask the photographer for a price list. Be sure to find out what packages are available, or if you can craft your own to meet your unique needs. While it is important that you find a high-quality photographer, it is also crucial that you locate one that you can afford. Be sure to ask how much re-prints cost after the fact. In addition, after your event and the photographer is paid, who owns the copyrights to the photos - you or the photographer? This will impact whether or not you can make copies of the photos on your own, without violating copyright laws. Whenever possible, get a copyright release in writing from your photographer. Another item to be aware of is the negatives. Do you get them in the cost of your photography package, or do they cost extra? What do they charge for “overtime” if you want them to stay longer the day of? Comfort Level It is also vitally important that you and your fiancÈ are comfortable with the photographer you choose. You’ll want one that is easy-going rather than overbearing. Remember, you’ll be spending a great deal of time with this person, so it’s important that you find someone you like, that you think will work well with your guests. Also, be sure to find out whether the photographer will be taking the pictures-or whether the duty will be delegated to an assistant. Article by: Michelle O’Connor, Las Vegas Wedding Package

Wedding favors that won’t break the bank

July 11th, 2008

You’re a crafty person, and because you have such a tight budget for your
wedding
, you have decided to make as much as possible for the event,
including your wedding favors. Lucky for you, there are hundreds of ideas
for do-it-yourself favors that won’t break the bank.

Wedding favors have been around for some time. During the 16th century in
France, nobility and royalty often gave porcelain as wedding favors. Few
brides today can afford such extravagant favors, but you can give a little
something that will serve as both a memento of your wedding and a token of
your appreciation to guests for attending your wedding. When making wedding
favors
, you have two options: you can either go the traditional route with
birdseed, almonds or sachets, or you can break out of the mode and come up
with your own unique favors.

Traditional wedding favors once consisted of small bags of rice that
guests could throw at the bride and groom. When experts discovered that rice
harmed birds, birdseed was used instead. If you’re having a traditional
wedding, you may want to go with birdseed favors. To make them, simply wrap
a couple of tablespoons of wild birdseed into some tulle and tie with
ribbon.

Another traditional wedding favor is almonds. During the 17th century,
couples gave guests three sugarcoated almonds wrapped in tulle. One almond
stood for the groom, one for the bride and one for the baby they would have,
thus making the favors a symbol of fertility. Chocolate-covered almonds were
also popular, and with the salty taste of the nuts and the sugary taste of
the chocolate, represented the bittersweetness of marriage. To make almond
favors, all you need to do is wrap some almonds in tulle and tie with
ribbon.

If birdseed or almonds do not suit you, you could try making some
sachets. During Victorian times, couples gave guests sachets filled with
rosemary, which symbolized that they would not forget their friends and
family even though they were starting a life together. To make these favors,
cut some silk fabric into small squares, insert a sprig of rosemary into
each square and tie with ribbon.

Along with traditional favors, there are many other not-so-traditional
favors you can give. Ideas include:

• Bubbles

Candles

Coffee mugs with coffee beans or hot cocoa mixes

• CDs

• Magnets

• Miniature champagne or wine bottles

• Ornaments • Pens • Personalized sodas • Recipes • Seed packets • Shot
glasses • Soaps • Tea or coffee tins • Wine stoppers

You can find most of these items in bulk at various stores. Then all you
have to do is decorate and personalize them any way you want and prepare to
give them away as wedding favors. Enjoy!
